Things to See
  • Taj Mahal: One of the Seven Wonders of the World and a world heritage, Taj Mahal is a monument of pride for India. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal, the monument is ‘love wrought in stones’. The structure is an architectural wonder with self-replicating geometry and symmetry of architectural elements. The entire mausoleum is decorated with inlaid floral designs and semi-precious stones. If viewed from across the Yamuna River, Taj seems to be suspended in air. The building glows with full moon, and is thus visited largely on full moon nights. Capture the beauty in your camera as you pose in front of it with your entire family.

  • Agra Fort: Another World Heritage site in Agra, the Fort stands next to the splendid Taj Mahal. A majestic structure itself, the fort was built by the great Mughal emperor Akbar. Built in red sandstone, the fort is crescent shaped and has a deep moat surrounding the entire outer wall. Be ready with your walking shoes for you will have to walk miles before you can explore all the wonders of this fort. The fort has within it a number of fascinating buildings. The most notable of which include the the Diwan-e-Am and Diwan-e-Khas (halls of public and private audience), Pearl Mosque, Khaas Mahal, Jehangir's Palace, Sheesh Mahal (mirrored palace) and Musamman Burj.

  • Fatehpur Sikri: Mughal Emperor Akbar had built this city about 35kms from Agra and was intended to be the capital of the Mughal Empire. Unfortunately, due to shortage of water the capital was shifted back to Agra. Though deserted, the city has retained some of its magnificent structures. Most important of these include the Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas, halls of public and private audience. Dargah of Shaikh Salim Chisti and the Jami Masjid are also present inside the fort complex.

  • Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb: The tomb built by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, Ghiyas-ud-din Beig. Laid in white marble and designed with lattice work, the structure is often regarded as ‘Baby Taj’. Set amidst a garden it is a nice place to have a leisurely stroll. Kids would especially love it as they explore the waterways and walkways.

  • Aaram Bagh: The oldest Mughal garden in India, this garden was laid by the founder of the mighty Mughal Empire, Babur. The garden is in three levels, one for flower beds, one for flowers and vegetables and the third for structures and tanks.

  • Sikandara: This is famous for the tomb of Akbar, the construction of which was started by Akbar himself and later completed by Jehangir. The tomb is five-storeyed, built in red sandstone and marble and has several gardens inside the compound.
